Don't abandon the NT Royal Commission

Don't abandon the NT Royal Commission

The Northern Territory Government has announced its plans to introduce some of the harshest, most punitive youth justice laws in the country. They would:

  • Pour money into building new remand centres (prisons for young people while they wait for their day in court)

  • Make it harder for young people to get bail

  • Give police unprecedented powers

  • Restrict the ability of judges to put children on diversion programs, instead of sending them in prison.

We are calling on the NT Government to reconsider this knee-jerk political reaction, and instead implement the Northern Territory Royal Commission recommendations to invest in community and reduce the number of children behind bars.

Chief Minister Gunner: Don't abandon the NT Royal Commission

Add your voice to call on the Northern Territory Government to abandon this political, knee-jerk response and stay the course on implementing the NT Royal Commission recommendations to keep children and young people out of prison.

Dear Chief Minister Gunner, Attorney General Uibo and Minister for Territory Families Kate Worden,

We, the undersigned, were shocked and appalled to hear the Northern Territory Government's announcement of some of the harshest youth justice laws in the country. The plans to build new youth remand centres, give police unprecedented powers and restrict bail and diversion options for young people are in direct contradiction to the NT Royal Commission recommendations and will see the number of First Nations children behind bars skyrocket. We urge you to reconsider the NT Government's plans and stay the course on the NT Royal Commission. You owe it to these children, and the whole community, to invest in evidence-based reform that will improve the lives on the whole community.
