We have decades of research, evidence and Royal Commissions that show locking people away - disproportionately Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples - is brekaing individuals, communities and doing nothing to make us safer.

But politicans continue with their failed 'tough on crime' policies because they think it is politically popular. Let them know that there is public support to invest in the solutions that work - adequate housing, social services and community programs.

I am writing to you because I have just watched the documentary Incarceration Nation and am deeply concerned by the mass incarceration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including children as young as 10 years old.

The evidence is clear: pouring billions of dollars into the prison system to lock people up, is destroying lives, tearing families apart and doing next to nothing to keep communities safe. I am writing to you to ask you to take real, tangible action to close the gap and end this national shame.

Commit to raise the age of criminal responsibility from just 10 years old, to at least 14 years old. 
Commit to no new prisons and to re-directing funds from prisons and policing, into community programs, housing and services.

As Incarceration Nation makes clear, the imprisonment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is a result of decades of government failures in housing, social security, education, health and corrections - as well as discriminatory laws, policies and policing.

But raising the age of criminal responsibility, and investing in communities instead of building new prisons, could change the lives of thousands of people and make our communities healthier, safer places to live.

Business as usual is not working. State and territory governments acknowledged that when they signed the Closing the Gap Agreement. Now is the time for action.
