Call for a National Safety Plan for and by First Nations Women

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have been crystal clear: we need a standalone National action plan for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children.

Ministers Ruston, Payne and Prime Minister Scott Morrison said they were listening to our calls at the Women's Safety Summit - so now we need to make sure they follow through with action, and commit to a dedicated National Safety Plan developed by us. This will ensure that self-determined solutions to eliminate violence are listened to and invested in.

Dear Senators and Prime Minister,

I am writing to you following the release of the National Safety Plan. I was disappointed to see that while there was a commitment to a separate First Nations Action Plan, the calls of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family violence legal service providers, experts and victims-survivors does not appear to have been heard.

In Change the Record and the Family Violence Prevention and Legal Services Forum report 'Pathways to Safety' they clearly set out the need for a:

- Separate First Nations National Safety Plan that sits alongside, not beneath, a mainstream plan; and for 
- any plan to be self-determined and developed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family violence prevention and legal services, victims-survivors and communities.

You committed to listen to the expertise and experiences of the leaders represented at the Summit, and the support for a dedicated First Nations National Safety Plan was overwhelming. The calls were reiterated on every panel, by esteemed leaders such as Professor Marcia Langdon and June Oscar AO, by the 14 frontline family violence prevention and legal services, and many others.

The Morrison Government has committed to Closing the Gap and doing things differently - in partnership, with respect.

It  is in this spirit that we urgently call you on to listen to the clear demand for a dedicated National Safety Plan FOR and BY First Nations women and commit to its development and resourcing as a matter of urgency.
